Transition to secondary school
Moving from primary school to secondary school is a significant transition in a student’s life and for some this can be a daunting experience.
Students will attend an Orientation Day towards the end of Grade 6, where they meet their classmates, tour the school and complete a range of ‘getting to know you’ activities. It is also a good time to ask any questions that they may have.
Some tips for making the transition easier:
1. Get Organized:
Secondary school often comes with more subjects, homework, and extracurricular activities. Develop good organizational habits such as using a planner or digital calendar to keep track of assignments, projects, and deadlines.
2. Make New Friends:
It’s natural to feel nervous about making new friends but remember that everyone else is in the same boat. Be open to meeting new people, join clubs or sports teams that interest you, and participate in group activities to help forge new friendships.
3. Ask for Help When Needed:
Don’t hesitate to ask teachers, counsellors, or older students for help or guidance if you’re struggling with schoolwork or adjusting to the new environment. They are there to support you and want to see you succeed.
4. Stay Positive:
Moving to a new school can be challenging but try to maintain a positive attitude and approach the experience with an open mind. Embrace new opportunities for learning and growth, and don’t be discouraged by setbacks or obstacles along the way.
5. Stay Connected with Family and Friends:
Moving to secondary school doesn’t mean losing touch with old friends from primary school. Make an effort to stay connected with them through social media, phone calls, or meetups outside of school to maintain those relationships.
Remember that it’s normal to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness about starting secondary school. With time and patience, you’ll adjust to the new environment and thrive.
